Living here

House information

Physical House

The house is an owner-occupied, 5 bedroom, 2 12 bath, rad 1900s house with tons of old details. The main floor of the house has a living room, good sized kitchen and huge dining room, as well as a utility room with a washer and dryer and a half bath. The top floor of the house has three bedrooms with large closets and a full bathroom. The finished basement has two bedrooms, a bathroom, another hangout space and a second kitchen and laundry area.

There are exposed beams in the basement, nice hardwoods throughout the upper floors and tile and carpet in the basement. The large, shady backyard has a deck and raised beds. We are adding more raised beds in the sunnier front area of the yard. There is a two car garage that will be used as light storage and shop space for wood working (and maybe more?).

The neighborhood

The neighborhood is fantastic. A sub-10 minute walk gets you to Laurelhurst theater, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and Everett House (a spa that is perfect for the winter). All of the things on Belmont are really close by as well (Sweet Hereafter, Bare Bones, Conquistador, etc). Laurelhurst park is 3 blocks away.

House vibe

From a culture perspective, we want to foster a community of people who are stable, poly/LGBTQ+ friendly, and sex & body positive. We want to share food and want folks interested in living “green” (recyling, reducing waste where possible, esp. food waste). We really enjoy having roommates who want to hang out around the kitchen table and talk, but also have a developed social circle outside of the house.

We would love to be surrounded by more craftspeople (construction/ joinery, welding, sewing, cooking, etc). There is usually at least one house improvement project in progress, and several woodworking or metalworking projects in progress in the garage.

There will be a newborn in the house in mid-2019, so being comfortable with that is important. We are open to families/people with kids.

We like having people in our home and host medium sized events every month or so. They have included a Manhattan party, a hot wings party, a cookie swap at Christmas and a Thanksgiving dinner. In the future, we’re interested in a larger-scale meal prep event (1001 Dumplings?), mason jar meal swaps, dinner parties, board game nights etc. We don’t want a dance party house, but we would be very happy to have a board-game party house or a dinner party house.

There’s a loving dog in the house, but we aren’t looking for any more dogs or cats.

The house shares food, except meat, booze & most cheeses. The goal is to share the cost of ingredients, not pre-prepped foods. We get an imperfect produce order every week. We frequent CostCo and Cash & Carry. We are interested in reducing waste (both food waste and packaging waste), and keep a running list of food that goes bad on a whiteboard near the fridge. Think more like tomato sauce, kale and rice, not veggie patties, fancy pastas or frozen pizzas.
